Career Goal Setting Tips

Home » Personal Goals » Career Goal Setting

By Johnathan Eqar

Are you tired of treading to work every day knowing the mundane tasks you must complete?

Have you been longing to get a better position at work, or even contemplated a new career path?

You absolutely can start setting career goals according to YOUR dreams.

Whether you are just looking to get promoted, secure a raise, or thinking of going after a new job, here are a few strategies you can apply to ensure you are successful in achieving your career goals.

List Your Goals

One of the biggest steps in successful career goal setting is to have a clear idea of what you want and where you would like to be. You can do this by setting S.M.A.R.T goals - Specific, Measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound.

Read how to set SMART goals and apply it to your career goals.

Let your skills and talents shine!

Write down on a piece of paper all of your strong points.

If you are extremely organized, excellent customer service provider, or a speedy typist - highlight those points in your work environment to show your boss why you deserve a raise, or promotion.

Never stop improving yourself

While you would like your talents and skills to shine through, you still need to perfect your abilities.

If you can only type 40 words per minute, but being able to type 65 words per minute means you would qualify for that promotion to be the head administrator, then honing those typing skills will be a great benefit for you both in the work place and to build your confidence.

There are certain key skills that can bring you great success in your business or career.

Identify these key skills, and work to improve it.

Do more than expected

“The only certain means of success is to render more and better service than is expected of you, no matter what your task may be” – Og Mandino

Volunteer to take on extra work. This will show the best you can do in a certain situation.

Most people only do what they’re told, they’re not willing to do anything outside their job scope.

By going the extra mile and delivering MORE than you are paid for, you will stand out.

Only small minorities of people are willing to deliver more than they are told, that’s why they are paid more.

Not only will taking on new jobs give you the ability to shine, it will also allow you the opportunity to increase your skills in other areas.

Keep your confidence about you and soon enough one of your supervisors will take notice.

Stay Committed

Great successes are achieved because people stay committed to their goals.

If you really want to be successful in achieving your goals, it is most important to stick to your commitments.

You need to be committed to keeping promises both to yourself and others.

Do what you say you will. Not just talk.

Take pride in everything you do knowing that it is a reflection of who you are, believe in the work you do and know that it can be a great contribution to your company and society you live in.

Be persistent and patient

Above all when setting your career goals successfully, be persistent and patient.

Keep on working towards your goals and be patient, trusting that all things will come together. Trust that you will get everything you strive for with hard work and perseverance.

Acknowledge that there will be setbacks and obstacles in your way, but with consistent actions and dedication to your goals you will find a way to overcome them.
