Getting ready for travel? Here are tips for getting organized for travel

By Mary Frederick

Everyone looks forward to a vacation. However for many people along with the excitement and anticipation can come a great deal of anxiety.

The worries over remembering everything that you need and packing it into one suitcase can seem like a lot of work.

No matter how long the trip is or where you are traveling to, you can incorporate good sound organization skills into the equation to make things easier.

You are far more likely to enjoy your trip and have less work to do before and after the trip if you approach it with organization.

So how can you keep up with everything that you have to do before you depart on a trip?

Make a List

Sounds simplistic, doesn’t it? It may sound easy, but you’d be amazed at how few people actually create a list and then stick to it.

When you know that you’re going to be traveling, create a list of all the things that you need to do a couple of weeks before you leave.

Create a checklist of the things you need to bring, the things you need to do, and what you are sure to need on this trip.

This list will surely change from day to day as you cross items off and add new ones, but it can be your savior in successfully planning for your trip.

Don’t leave any task, no matter how small, off of your list. If you have to run to the dry cleaners, then write that down. If you have to pick up medicine, then write that down.

Don’t leave anything to assumption or memorization, because those are sure to be the items that you forget when you leave. Write down everything you need to do, and if necessary attach timelines to these tasks for simple digestion.

Put Out the Items You Plan to Take in Advance

If you wait until the night before your scheduled trip to pack, this is an instant recipe for disaster. Rather than rushing around at the last minute and risking the possibility of forgetting something important, lay everything out in advance.

Think through the number of days you plan to be gone, the occasions on your trip, and then lay out the clothes that you are sure to need. Include accessories, shoes, socks, and anything else that you may need.

It’s important when it comes to proper organization to pack only what you really need. While many of us may have a tendency to over pack for the “just in case” situations, this will be a true detriment when it comes to getting organized for travel.

Stick with a plan and pack only the items that you are sure to need. This will help you to travel lighter and truly stay organized, both before the trip and after.

Plan for Your Absence in Advance

If you know that you’re going to need passports, allow enough time for that length process. If you know that you’ll be gone for awhile, be sure to temporarily turn off your mail delivery.

Be sure to plan out any work activities around your travel schedule so that you aren’t scampering at the last moment.

Part of being organized, particularly when it comes to travel, is to be proactive. If you think through the tasks you will need to accomplish ahead of time, this will save you a lot of last minute rushing.

Get money from the bank in advance and put it aside. Make a note to turn down the heat before you leave the house.

There’s no such thing as being too organized when it comes to travel.

If you follow these simple tasks, you are much more likely to enjoy your trip while you’re gone. You are also much more likely to remember everything and prevent a frazzled state before you leave.

Organization can make travel a truly enjoyable and far less stressful activity!
