Learn these essential goal setting skills for achieving all your goals. Goal setting has its standard steps which are very methodical and practical (define the goal; specify a timeline; establish a solution; devise an action plan; get started). However, there are a number of goal setting skills for achieving goals that you can use which will assist you in both the process of setting goals and in achieving them. Let’s jump in straight away:
Use Your Imagination
You have a goal, but you need to decide the best way of getting there. This requires an open mind in order to create and explore a wide variety of options.Furthermore, you need to be able to picture or feel or imagine what it will be like when you achieve your goal. If you can do this, you will set up real drive for the work and actions involved.
Become Self-aware
You need to know yourself in order to choose goals that are most appropriate for you. In other words, you need to know what you want, why you want it and the best way of getting yourself to achieve your goal. You also need to know where you tend to procrastinate. For example, perhaps you find meetings uncomfortable, so you will often defer them and end up behind schedule. Once you are aware of where your difficulties lie, you can alter your action plan so as to reduce the possibility of your encountering situations where you will get stuck in procrastination. What is even better is if you can find out why it is that you procrastinate and then resolve this. Using the above example, perhaps you actually have a fear of making a fool of yourself when on the spot in a meeting situation. So, how can you improve your confidence here?
Cultivate Flexibility
The only predictable thing about life is that it is not predictable. Unexpected occurrences will arise and situations will change. These affect your goals and your action plans. You need to be aware of this possibility when you set up your goals and the process, and cater for it. Put a bit of a buffer into the timeline, think about what will happen if you unexpectedly can’t carry out a certain part of the plan – what other options are there?Besides catering for hiccups in your plans, you also need to be flexible when you are carrying out your steps. Don’t be derailed just because something does not progress as you expected.
Keep a Positive Attitude
When you are working towards a goal, you have to stay positive. You know what you want, you’ve planned, you’ve catered for different eventualities; you’ve set it all up for success. Here are some pointers to staying positive: • Keep focused on what goes right • Think about what you want, not what you don’t want • Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get something 100% right. It’s unlikely that everything will go smoothly. Remember, it’s all a learning experience. • Get rid of any negative thoughts about how it won’t work, how you can’t do it etc.
Dogged Determination
Achieving goals is not always easy. You need to stay determined and a plan of action helps with this. It shows you your progress and achievements along the way. Keep focusing on these and the final outcome. Think of what it will be like when you have reached your goal. Push on and enjoy! The process is just as important as the outcome.
