How to Organize a Kitchen Easily and Effectively
Most of us spend more time in our kitchen than just about any other room in the house. We are either preparing food, cooking, or eating, and that means a lot of time in this favorite room of the house. Organizing your kitchen may seem like a mammoth task, but if you break it down and keep up with it along the way, you will find that it’s easy to maintain and allows you to experience a bit of order and means that you get to enjoy this cozy room of the house so much more. Let’s look at some simple and effective ways on how to organize a kitchen without spending an entire weekend taking inventory:
How to Organize a Kitchen1. Everything Has a Spot 2. Organize by Task or Food Group 3. Timing is Everything 4. Do the Prep Work
Everything Has a SpotThe problem with kitchens is that they have so many different items that have a variety of different purposes. This equals the potential for a whole lot of clutter and that’s where people get lost. The key to an organized kitchen is to assign everything its’ very own spot. Every little utensil, spice, or appliance or food no matter the size has its own place. This may seem like a menial thing or a task that is far too broad to take on, but if you decide upon a spot for each and everything and keep up with these assignments, then you will make your job a whole lot easier. You’ll find things that you didn’t even know existed. Organize By Task or Food GroupThere’s no such thing as too much organization when it comes to your kitchen. If there are certain foods that make sense to put together such as snack foods or baby foods, then give them a spot where they dwell together until consumption. If you have utensils that you use for baking, then group them together in a dedicated area. Consider the things that you use often and then group them with each other for an easy way of locating them when you need them, and even more important a dedicated spot to put them away in each and every time. Timing is EverythingHow many of us have gone to pull something out of the freezer and found a meat in there from a year before? We’re all guilty of forgetting about foods that we put away with every intention of using them at a later date. So the key to success in this area is to bring forward the food that you’ve had in your pantry, freezer, or refrigerator to the front of the group and then put the new ones behind. This shows you at eye level what you have and then puts the older items behind. If you incorporate this rule each and every time that you go shopping or stock the pantry with food, you are sure to go through everything you have and skip past the problem of throwing out and wasting old food. Do the Prep WorkWhen it comes to meal preparation or even using up groceries that you buy, a little prep work can go a long way. For all of us, the rule is that if something is easily accessible and at eye level or visible, we tend to gravitate towards it. So when you get home from the grocery store, do the work right then and there of chopping or washing fresh fruit or vegetables and put it where you are sure to see it. If you prep a meal beforehand or freeze it as a full meal, then you won’t have to do as much work to cook and eat it. Whatever prep work you can do in advance will save you bundles of time later and allow you to truly stay organized—after all, isn’t that what we all want?
