How to Organize Your Room
How to organize your room in a flash utilizing simple and effective methods |
By Mary Frederick Most of us have it in our home — that room that no matter what we do always seems to be a mess! It may seem as though organizing that room or any room for that matter is constantly a work in progress. However with a special attention to detail, some diligence, and some strong organization skills, you can get any room in order in a flash. The key in organizing a room is to keep up with it. Most of the time when we take a step back and really look at “that room”, we realize that we were our own worst enemy. If you don’t keep up with the organization in any space, you are eventually doomed. So here are some effective and rather seamless ways on how to organize your room (or any room) within your house—even “that room”. Keep Up With ItThe reason that most rooms get out of control is that we treat them as a “catch all”. Rather than moving a pile from one room to the next or letting the stacks get too high, keep up with the work as it comes along. If you get in newspapers, have a “read it or pitch it” policy on a weekly basis. If you like to save cards from special occasions, save only the truly important ones and then pitch after a year. The problem with an unorganized room comes when you tend to accumulate things and hold onto them far longer than you need to. Another key element in keeping up with any room in terms of organization is to set aside time each week and get organized. This shouldn’t be such a huge task if you are truly getting rid of things as soon as you use them or decide you don’t need them. However if you designate even a small amount of time to go through everything each week, then you are much more likely to stick with it moving forward. Give Everything Its Own PlaceRather than throwing all of your mail on a table, give it a designated spot where it’s easy to keep up with and organize. Have a box, folder, or container for all of the things that you need to keep organized. Rather than putting out a pile of magazines on the table, get a sleek magazine rack. Every item in your house and in each room should have its own designated spot. This is the first and most important lesson in organization—and it really works! Look for similarities or synergies to make this system really work. Group together all of your office supplies, your extra canned goods, whatever it is that needs some organizing within a given room. Then shop for containers and shelving units that will properly house them. You want to be able to go to a specific spot and know exactly where you will find the items you’re looking for. That’s how you know your room is truly organized. Institute the System Throughout the HouseEvery room can be organized. It just takes some time and effort. Start out with one room as a basis. Then work through it to develop a system that truly works well for you. Take that system and all of the tools and resources that you utilize and apply it to other areas of the house. A system and organization tools that can work in the kitchen can work equally as well in the bedroom if worked in appropriately. If you’re concerned with hitting up “that room” first, start smaller. Then see how well your system works for you. Get the whole family in on the act and make the system something that you all stick to—and never have to face clutter again!
