Memory Techniques to Help You Remember Important Facts and Soar in School

Home » Study Skills » Memory Techniques for School Subjects

When you were little kid you probably played the game of Memory.

It was the one where you had to pick the two cards by simply remembering where the matching one was on the table.

During that time it was a challenge to be sure that you were remembering everything clearly.

Well, the truth is that memorization continues to be a challenge as you grow up, but when you enter school it becomes an essential skill that you have to have. Throughout your scholastic years you will need to use it, and you may think that you are simply not good at memorizing things.

However, there are methods that you can use to help increase your memorization capacity so that you can excel in your schoolwork.

Put it in order. One of the best ways that you can start to remember a group of information is by simply putting it in some sort of order. You can choose to alphabetize or arrange it by date. The choice is yours, but the result will be easier memorization.

Utilize more than just your ears. The truth is that everyone has a different learning style, but most people do not learn by simply listening. Therefore if you can spend some time associating physical movements or cues with information you may retain it more easily.

Create links for yourself. Often part of the reason that you forget information is that you have nothing linking it together. If you can create a connection with another piece of information it might help you retain the facts that you are trying to memorize.

Make it real to you. Many times it is difficult to remember abstract concepts or facts because they are simply not pertinent to your lifestyle. What this means is that you need to find some sort of hook into the information that you can connect to.

Jot it down. Just as many learners are able to retain things through movement others do well when they write things down. If you can copy down the information that you are trying to remember you might be surprised with how much sticks with you.

Create some quiet. The truth is that it is difficult for you to focus on memorization if there are tons of distractions around you. If you are really trying to commit something to memory be sure that you are in an environment that is conducive to learning.

Let go of the pressure. Often a lack of memorization is very highly associated with stress. Try to take some of the pressure off of yourself when you are trying to retain information. Be sure that you are eating and drinking properly so that your body is fully fueled up for the educational challenge.

Practice, Practice, Practice! The more you go over it, the easier that it will be to memorize. Really spend some time reviewing the information and speak it aloud over and over again. This will help you to use several senses to retain the desired facts.

Don't get discouraged. The old adage goes, if at first you don't succeed, try try again! Well, this is true. Do not give up. If you keep with it you will get that information memorized.

The early bird gets the worm. That means that you are at your best memorization capacity during the morning hours. Use this to your advantage by studying in the mornings rather than saving your work for after sunset.

A little bit a day, goes a long way. Many students fall into the trap of studying for several hours at once. Unfortunately, this can just overload your brain. For true memorization you will want to spread out your learning to short periods every day.

Speaking of every day. you want to be sure that you are reviewing the material that you are learning on the same day that it is presented. This will help you to shift that information to your stronger long term memory.

Keep smiling! It can be easy to start to loose your enthusiasm for memorization. Instead, stay focused on the fact that you are doing something positive for yourself and stay upbeat.

Edit your information. Be sure that you take care not to overload yourself with every piece of information. Instead, try to focus on the core concepts and vocabulary that you need to retain.

Mix it up. When in doubt, try to create a mixture of the different learning techniques that you are using. This will help ensure that you are getting the style and supplementation that you need.

Take note of what you forget. When you find that a fact is not sticking with you do not just skip over it. Instead, take note of what you are missing so that you are able to go back and focus on that piece.

Don't memorize and go. Even if you have information memorized, if you leave that information alone you will forget it. Be sure that you keep using it so that it stays fresh in your mind.

Use visual images. Sometime drawing a picture or associating facts with an image will help you to really remember those important facts.

You can never stop learning. This means that you need to keep at it over and over again until you think that you couldn't do any more, and then you need to have one more session. This will ensure that you get the time that will help that information stick.

Just say thank you. Sometimes taking a compliment is difficult, but if you are getting them because of your quick memorization and recollection just say thanks. Do not be afraid to accept the praise. You've worked hard to earn it!
