Sales Goal Setting Tips

Home » Personal Goals » Sales Goal Setting

By Jonathan Eqar

Setting goals is crucial for one to succeed in anything.

Some salespeople set goals and find that after a year, they are nowhere close to their goals. As a salesperson it is unlikely that you will achieve sales success without charting a clear path on how you intend to do so.

Goals work to keep you focused and driven

Whether the sales goals are of your own making or defined by the institution or person you work for, the achievement of your sales goals will be very dependent on the strength and execution of the strategy you choose.

That said it is not that difficult for you to achieve their sales goals. Below are three steps you can use to achieve your sales targets.

3 Steps to Successful Sales Goal Setting

1. Clearly define your goals
2. Breakdown the mega goal into smaller targets
3. Learn time management skills to execute the plan

Step 1: Clearly define your goals

It’s easy to work on an estimate of what you need to achieve. However, you must convert your stated target into SMART goals – S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time bound.

Getting this step right is essential in setting you in the right direction and laying the required foundation for success. After all, it would be difficult to “achieve” success if you don’t define success.

Step 2: Breakdown the mega goal into smaller targets

One of the biggest causes of failure to achieve one's targets is the feeling of being overwhelmed by the enormity of the goal.

To deal with this, break a yearly goal down into quarterly or monthly targets that you can then use to monitor how well you are doing.

The advantage of doing this is you are able to quickly see when you need to step up your sales drive in order to get back on track as far as your annual target goes. It is at this stage that you should also define the resources you will need to achieve the overall goal.

Step 3: Learn time management skills to execute the plan

Once you have clearly defined your objectives and have the detailed plan indicating the daily, monthly, weekly and quarterly target that you need to meet, then it is time to implement.

A good strategy is only as good as its execution.

I suggest that you apply these simple time management techniques to help you start getting things done:

Prioritizing Skills
Get a higher return for the time and effort you put in. Prioritize your tasks and focus only on high-value, sales generating activities

Overcome Procrastination
There’s no point having a beautiful sales plan when you can’t implement the steps. Learn techniques for overcoming procrastination.

Motivation Techniques
We are all familiar with the age old custom of New Year's Day and birthday resolutions; most of them never take off the ground. Learn motivation techniques to ensure you achieve all your goals.

It’s only as you take action that you can identify weakness and if necessary make the necessary changes midstream.

A final word…

“If you’re going through hell, keep going” – Winston Churchill

On the way to sales success, you’ll definitely encounter failures. Don’t let these “failures” drag you down. Keep going. There’s no magic bullet to sales success. Get past those failures, and sales success will be yours.
