Self Motivation Tips For Achieving Your Goals

Self Motivation Tips: Hawaii as a Goal

Motivation, or lack thereof, is a constant struggle for me. Some things I’m highly motivated to do: make money to pay the bills, get meals on the table, sleep. But those things will all catch up with me if I don’t do them, so motivation is easy.

What about harder things? Well, that’s where self-motivation skills come in. Over the past several decades, I’ve learned lots about myself and about the things that motivate me. Here are a handful of things I’ve learned.

Identify Needs and Wants

I’m not going to be too motivated unless it’s something I really need or want. As I mentioned earlier, a lot of needs come easily. If I don’t work, I don’t have money. If I don’t sleep, I eventually become my own evil twin and someone escorts me to my room.

My partner and I celebrate our tenth anniversary this year and we want to go back to Hawaii. I really want this, can already feel the warm ocean and see the fish, and I’m really motivated. So I’m doing a little extra work and putting the money away for the trip.

Editor’s tip: Set your goals and put them down on paper. One of the first self motivation tips you should learn is to put your goal down on paper. This article shows you why putting pen to paper can help you focus on your fitness goals - it applies to all other goals, whether it’s a financial, health or personal goal, putting it down on paper will have a positive motivating effect on you

Tell Someone About Your Goal

Dang! I just told you I want to go to Hawaii. Now I have to make it happen. See, wasn’t that easy? I hate to look like a fool, and I’m willing to bet you do, too. By announcing to the world that I’m going to Hawaii in September, I’m now doubly motivated to make it happened.

Editor’s tip: Choose the one goal that will make a big difference in your life, and make a public commitment. This is a huge step to take, but surprisingly, the impact can be significant. There will be naysayers who will criticize your goals, and there will be those who support you all the way. Either way, the public pressure will drive you to achieve your goals

Figure Out How to Do It

Goals often fail because we can’t figure out how to make them happen. We get stuck at the very beginning and become paralyzed by the “can’t figure it out” blues.

In this case, I’ve already identified a source of income that will give me the money I need. All I have to do is sit in my chair a few extra hours a day, writing three simple articles, and I’ll have the money for the trip in about eight weeks. Since we won’t leave until mid-September, I’ll have a few extra weeks to earn some pocket money. Although who needs money when you have fins and a snorkel?

Editor’s tip: Create an action plan. List down the necessary steps you need to take before reaching your goals. With a list of steps, you will know EXACTLY what to do, where to go or what to get to achieve your goals. This will rapidly accelerate your progress towards reaching your goals!

Rewards

The trip is its own reward, but I’ve identified two intermediate rewards as well. When I hit a certain dollar amount, I’ll start making reservations. A bit more money and I’ll buy some new clothes for the trip. Those are both gratifying intermediate rewards and will keep me motivated to continue doing the extra work to pay the trip.

Editor’s tip: One of the final self motivation tips is to establish rewards after reaching every milestone of yours. That’s why you must create an action plan, so that you can actually track your progress. You want to associate accomplishment with something positive- so get some rewards ready!
