Can't seem to achieve your goals? Reach your goals successfully with these tips |
By Katie-Anne Gustafsson Everyone who wants to succeed in life needs to set goals but the real trick to success isn’t in identifying your goals. It’s not even in writing your goals down. It’s more about identifying how you are going to achieve them. Take a look at the following steps for setting achievable goals and see if you can use this to put your goals on the right track to success. Name it to Claim it!Identify your main goal, your destination. Make sure this is a clear goal where you will be 100% certain when you achieve it. If it’s a little ambiguous – perhaps “Walk the Great Wall of China” or “Own a House” – then you need to define this with some specific guidelines or “rules”. Give Yourself GuidelinesBy stating guidelines such as a timeframe with the goal you are giving it more of a sense of urgency; for example “Walk the Great Wall of China before the age of 40” or “Own a House in 5 years” gives you a specific goal you can work towards. Without imposing some kind of “rule” on achieving your goal you reduce its priority level. If you know you have to own a house in 5 years, then you know you can’t afford to waste time just dreaming about it, you have to be actively moving towards your goal. Identify Smaller GoalsThis is where success is really defined; in identifying the smaller goals that you will need in order to achieve your final goal. What do you need in order to achieve your goal? Will you need more money? How will you get that? Do you need a different job? Will this require more or different qualifications than you have now? How can you get these? Write your main goal at the bottom of a sheet of paper. Now write a list of everything you need in order to achieve that goal. At first, these don’t need to be in any particular order. Just write down all the necessary things you need in order to achieve your goal. Now reorder them so that you have a logical journey from where you are now to your final destination. Look out for Sub Goal MinefieldsIt could be that you have some smaller goals that also have sub-goals that will need to be taken care of before you can mark that small goal as complete. An example of this could be in the case of travel; one small goal towards your chosen holiday location could be to obtain a passport. However, if you don’t have your birth certificate to hand, then you will need to obtain one of these first before you can apply for the passport. Make sure that all small goals are clarified and added to your list in the correct order. Take a look at your final list. You not only have a comprehensive outline of what you need to do to achieve your goals, but you also know exactly what the next step will be and have a check-list to show what progress you are making. Now that’s successful goal-setting!
