• Procrastinate on Low-Value Tasks
• Delay Gratification
• Commitment

Focus on the tips outlined above to stop procrastination, and start reaching your goals!

Creating Direction in Your Life

Motivational speaker Zig Ziglar mentioned that he could hit the target more accurately than top-class archer Howard Hill. Howard Hill was so accurate that he could hit a bulls-eye from 50 feet and then literally split the first arrow with the next shot.

Would it be possible for you to hit the target better than Howard Hill?

Of course you can! With the exception that Howard Hill was blindfolded, and turned around a few times. You would definitely hit the target more accurately than Howard Hill.

Sounds silly, doesn’t it? You might ask “How could Howard Hill hit a target he could not see?!”

But Zig Ziglar follows up with another question, “How can you hit a target you don’t even have?”

Your ‘targets’ shape your actions. If you have daily targets to hit, you are able to focus on high-value tasks. You can do this by creating a prioritized list of goals. Do you have a prioritized list of goals? Without direction in life you will never stop procrastination.

Watch the short video below by Brian Tracy to find out how to start setting and achieving goals by first determining your priorities.

This is only the first step to setting and achieving goals. Is creating a prioritized list of goals enough to help you stop procrastination and reach your goals? You know the answer- Of course not!

How to Ensure Your Highest Priority Tasks Get Completed

Take your highest value task on your list, and reserve a block of time during the week, where you will receive NO interruptions whatsoever, to focus single-handedly on your top priority. Practice this for a month to see how much more things you can get done.

Start right now, create a list of targets you want to hit, and prioritize them. Everytime you see yourself doing a low-value tasks use the prioritized list as a reminder to yourself to get back to higher value activities.

Procrastinate on Low-Value Tasks

The reality is you are constantly procrastinating… but great time managers know WHEN and WHAT activities to procrastinate on. When you have a prioritized list of activities, you can stop procrastination.

Without a list, you can’t keep track of what activities you are constantly putting off. Find out the most time-wasting activity you engage in, and procrastinate on that particular activity. Is mindless surfing on the net or TV causing you to procrastinate on your work? Learn how to handle distractions.

Delay Gratification

Why couldn’t you stop procrastination on low-value activities in the past?

The reason is ‘instant gratification’. At that particular moment that low-value activity seemed to bring pleasure.

Most of the time people have the “I want it now” attitude, whether it’s getting a car, clothes, or other expensive ‘toys’. They want instant gratification, and yet, this was, and still is, the major cause of most people going broke and losing precious time.

For some it’s the inability to resist taking fattening foods although they know they are overweight.

Learning how to delay gratification makes setting and achieving goals easier. It’s so much easier to push food away when you are overeating, then to spend hours shedding pounds on the treadmill. It’s so much easier to control spending on unnecessary items, than to earn it all back.

To use your time in the most effective way, you must learn how to take control of your consistent decisions and delay gratification. It’s the small, consistent steps you take that really shape your life. It’s not one big accomplishment in your life that brings outstanding results; it is the small, consistent decisions you make that cause you to stray further away from your goal.

So, start delaying gratification on unimportant activities and complete your top priority tasks for the day. You will, in fact, have more free time to do the things you love when you learn how to manage your time.

Commitment to Setting and Achieving Goals

“You don't pay the price for success. You pay the price for failure.” – Zig Ziglar

Are you committed to following the steps provided above?

When you have a backlog of unfinished work, it’s not because you suddenly were given a huge load of work, it was accumulated over time, it was the small steps you took that made a big impact. If someone is overweight, it’s because of his or her consistent decisions to indulge in bad eating habits.

It’s the small things that make a big difference. But successful people make commitments to take control of their life. As Zig Ziglar puts it, “you enjoy the price of success”. Rewards may not come instantly but it’s worth the price to put in the effort now.

Make a commitment right now to follow and apply the tips above for setting and achieving goals.
