5 Ways to Stop Clutter Problems

Frustrated with clutter in your home? Here are simple ways to stop clutter problems.

Once you’ve dealt with a clutter problem, you want to do your best to avoid it in the future.

Even if you’ve seen what clutter can do to disrupt somebody’s life and you want to prevent it in your own, there are helpful ways to do just that.

If you want to put a stop to clutter problems or prevent them from overrunning your home, then pay attention.

Though clutter can happen easily, it doesn’t have to be a certainty.

With some good intentions, and an eye to the very source of clutter in the first place, you can put a stop to it once and for all.

So before you let the clutter and “declutter” cycle overtake you and your home, consider incorporating the following five ways to stop clutter problems from occurring.

Get to the root cause of the clutter

The majority of the time there are rather obvious causes for clutter.

These are often associated with behaviors or habits that are not only common but understandable.

Perhaps you hold onto items because you were always taught to do so. Perhaps you are so busy that you just never make the time to get to the clutter culprit. (find time to organize clutter)

Take a step back and really evaluate what is causing the clutter.

Is it learned behavior?

Is it based on previous need?

Is it just because you don’t allow ample time to avoid the clutter in the first place?

You have to dig deep for this one, but if you can pinpoint the cause or the reason for the clutter, then you can really work to avoid it from occurring in the future.

Get rid of, give away, or donate the items that you have no use for

We’ve all held onto gifts that we received and had no use for.

We’ve held onto newspaper clippings that we thought would come of value. Perhaps we’ve held onto every picture we’ve ever taken.

At some point, it’s time to get real and do your part to get rid of or give away the items that cause clutter in our homes.

You can donate the gifts, or simply get rid of the pictures. If there are items that you can give away, then by all means do so. Otherwise it’s time to get rid of the items once and for all.

This should teach you to find uses or ways to give away these items in the future.

Purchase only what you really need

Many people have a tendency to purchase extra items when they are on sale.

The rationale is that they want to stock up when something is being offered at a good price. Though this can work well, if you keep a limited or reasonable supply, it can often get out of hand.

It’s one thing if you’re keeping a couple of extra rolls of paper towel in the house. It’s quite another if you’re buying two of the same sweaters each time you hit the store.

Learn to buy only what you need to avoid the extra items from turning into clutter.

Stay organized and be proactive

The best way to stop clutter is to avoid it from ever happening. If you are proactive in your cleaning and organizing habits, and if you learn to practice these on a frequent basis, then the clutter won’t take control of you.

Though getting organized can be the hardest part, staying organized can be much easier if you are diligent about it. Be proactive and avoid your temptation to toss something to the side.

This will stop clutter problems right in its tracks!

Learn from past behaviors

If you’ve ever been a culprit of the dreaded clutter, then do your best to learn from past behaviors.

We all know that feeling when we take a look at an overly cluttered room.

We know what it feels like to have spent an entire weekend cleaning out the garage. Do you ever want to deal with that again? If the answer is a resounding no, then learn from these past situations and bad habits.

Learn to turn the problem of clutter into a more productive and fruitful habit of organization. This is a great way to stop clutter from ever happening, and to learn from past mistakes.
