Time Management Problems You Should Deal With To Become Effective At Managing Your Time!

Home » Tips » Time Management Problems

You could have put significant effort into planning your life and drawing up a – what you think is fairly watertight – time management system, and in the end only see that it is not as successful as you would like it to be.

There are a number of common time management problems that could be the cause of this issue and, if you become aware of them and resolve them, you can be on your way to managing your life in the best way.

Check some of these out and see if they apply to your struggles:

Procrastination

There are many tips for avoiding procrastination, but what you really need to do is determine why you are procrastinating. Once you know the reason and solve that, you will be A-for-away and leave those dragging feet behind. Here are some examples as to why you may be procrastinating and potential solutions:

You dislike the task. Can you make it more pleasant? Can you delegate it or get someone else to help?
It seems too big. Chunk it down into smaller pieces. These will be easier to fit into your schedule and tackle. You’ll also have a sense of achievement each time you complete one of the chunks, which is motivating.
You don’t feel confident in doing it. Do you need to learn a skill? Can someone help you?
Fear of failure. Work on understanding this fear. Work on increasing your confidence levels and changing your attitude towards failure. See it as a lesson and not an embarrassment.

When you find that you keep delaying an activity or wasting time when it comes to actually handling it, look at the reasons behind that.

Perfectionism

If we feel we always have to do something perfectly we will often find it difficult to start with the task or we will spend too much time on it. The best way of handling this is:

Get into the habit of “just going for it”. Start and work on it for a while without slowly making each part perfectly up to your standards. Once you have a foundation, you can always go back and improve on it.
Set strict time limits on your tasks. Get out of the habit of overrunning the time that you’ve allocated to the task just because you have to get that last bit of the work 100 percent correct.

Commitment Overload

Often we simply have too much to do considering the time we have available. To solve this you need to:

Maintain a clear view of what is important to you. i.e. your ultimate goals, and be able to prioritize your activities correctly.
Be able to say “no”. It is no use taking on more and more simply because you can’t assert your boundaries. In order to overcome this one, you have to get rid of your fear of potential rejection or your need to help. Remember that ultimately it is your goals in life that count.
Learn how to delegate.

Be aware of these issues. They can raise their heads at any stage; it doesn’t matter how solid your time managements system is.

Have ways to try to prevent these time management problems from occurring in the first place, but also have ways to detect them.
