Time Management Tips for the Busy Mom

Home » Time Management Tips » Time Management Tips for Moms

Being a mom is one of the most rewarding roles that a woman will ever experience. Seeing the face of your very own child and seeing them smile for the first time and experience so many of life’s little first is so fulfilling. While this job is so full of joy, it can also bring some newfound stress.

The most composed and proactive woman can find herself feeling overwhelmed, overworked, pulled in many different directions, and generally working without the safety net of a plan. Days can seem longer yet you can often feel like you get nothing accomplished.

So how does a busy mom manage her time to the fullest? How can a busy mom manage to get things accomplished in a day and still handle her full time and most important job of being a mother?

Time Management Tips for Busy Moms

1. Make a List
2. Work as a Team
3. Make Two of Everything
4. Stock Up Whenever Possible
5. Work Through Nap Times
6. Be Realistic

Make a List

It may sound rather obvious or trivial, but never underestimate the power of a good list. It can contain as little or as much detail as you wish, but having a master list of everything you want to get accomplished in a given day or week can make your life so much easier.

Sit down at the beginning of every week and write down the things that you absolutely must do such as errands like the grocery store, and then write down the items that may be longer term such as cleaning out the basement. Write it down and then it takes the load off of your mind and stress level and you will find so much joy in crossing things off.

Work as a Team

Whenever possible, try to schedule time for yourself or your errands with your spouse or a close family member. Just having an hour on a Saturday morning to run some errands solo or to have some time on a Tuesday night to run to the grocery store or even do your nails can do wonders for your stress level.

Discuss what the week looks like with your spouse or chosen family member or close friend. Then figure out where they are handoffs and how you can help each other to get some time to get even one thing accomplished.

Make Two of Everything

When you’re making dinner, it can be a real time saver to make an extra serving for another night. If you’re making a casserole, buy the items for and prepare an extra that you can throw right in the freezer. Do this for every meal that it makes sense for and you will find very quickly that you build up a freezer full of food that takes the guesswork and stress out of wondering what to make for dinner.

This is a huge time saver as we all have days where we are stressed to the max and can’t possibly stop to ponder what we will make for dinner and how we’ll find time to squeeze the cooking in. This works well if you make your own baby food as well so that you don’t have to do the work each and every day.

Stock Up Whenever Possible

We all hate the last minute but very necessary run to the store, as it sucks time out of our day and stands for another form of chaos. Whenever you do hit the grocery or drug store on a regularly planned trip, stock up on the items that you use the most and that can be stored.

This can not only save you time but if you are lucky enough to find the soap, cleaners, paper towel, or canned goods on sale, you’ll even save yourself some money at the same time.

Work Through Nap Times

Depending on how old your children are, you may find that you are lucky enough to still have nap times to schedule some time for items on your list.

This can be a great time to mop the floor, do a load of laundry, or catch up on some overdue phone calls. Whatever the amount of time you are allotted, you are likely to be able to cross something off of your list and that can make you feel good.

If nap time is no longer a reality or your little one has a shorter sleep window, and then fit in a couple of items after you put them down at night. A little bit here and there can take a lot of stress off of the overall “to do” list.

Be Realistic

The reality is that you will not get everything accomplished in a given day that you did before kids, and that’s okay. Every busy mom comes to the realization at some point in time that they can’t do what they used to do, but remember that your little one is the priority.

You will get it all done, it just may take you a little bit longer than it used to. Don’t’ be too hard on yourself as this rewarding new role of busy mom can also be demanding at times too.
