There are two things that are very important to manage your time more efficiently: • Remembering that time is limited • Accepting that everything needs time So, always bear in mind that you can’t do everything. You need to make trade-offs and then spend time on the aspects and areas of your life that are important to you. Once you know what you want and where you are going, these top time management tips will make it easier.
Improve Efficiency
There will be tasks that you are currently undertaking that you could really streamline. Here you need to look at where you could take a different approach and do things better and faster.Perhaps it means learning new skills or outsourcing some of the work. Usually when you revisit a task after a while, you can see it from a different angle and improve or revitalize the process.
Identify Where You Are Losing Energy
You need energy in order to get as much done as possible. There may be some tasks that you find particularly draining. These are important to identify and change. For example, perhaps you need to drive around a great deal for your work, but you find driving and traffic exhausting. Can you cut down the drive-time? Perhaps combine trips or get someone else to share some of this load? Maybe travel outside of peak-hour traffic? Managing your energy is key in managing your time. More energy often means more time.
Plan
By planning your day ahead, you generally will get more done. You can organise the tasks in a way that makes most the most sense and is the most efficient. If you are a little stuck to start with- Draw up a complete to-do list, it is then easier to identify the most important tasks. Take the tasks that will create the most value for your goals and start there. Often those that aren’t really necessary fall away. Always strive to build and keep momentum.
Watch Your Timing
Set realistic time frames and don’t overrun them. If you have allocated two hours for a task and you haven’t completed it by then, leave it and move on to the next item on your list. Getting behind will derail you. Rather take a look at the task at the end of the day and identify why you weren’t able to complete it (perhaps you were interrupted or maybe it took longer than expected). Schedule it in for tomorrow or another day. You would have learnt something about managing your time – maybe you need to address the problem of interruptions, or be more realistic in the time frames you set. Time management is not complicated, you simply need to try a few approaches and find what works for you. It all comes down to knowing what is important for you and then either adapting to the circumstances, avoiding them, or changing them in a way that suits you. Remember to revisit your schedule regularly as situations change and they can often be improved and add more value to your life.
